" Odor Characteristics of Undecanals with Methyl Branches" announced
at the 56th Annual Symposium on the Chemistry of Terpenes, Essential Oils, and Aromatics.

This study investigated correlation between methyl group position and odor when a methyl group was introduced to aliphatic long chain aldehydes. The study examined changes to odor characteristics as the methyl group was moved from the α position through to the ω-1 position.

Undecanals with methyl branches were chosen for consideration due to the scarcity of reported studies, and all varieties of methyl undecanals were synthesized and their odor variations investigated. Results confirmed that odor characteristics changed according to methyl group position.

These research results were also presented orally at the 56th Annual Symposium on the Chemistry of Terpenes, Essential Oils, and Aromatics (2012) under the title "Odor Characteristics of Undecanals with Methyl Branches."

The contents of this presentation are patented (Patent No. 6084105).
